A delegation of European imams and Muslim leaders, led by French imam Hassen Chalghoumi, was received by Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem on Monday.
A visit welcomed by Israel. Led by Hassen Chalghoumi, a delegation of imams and Muslim leaders from several European countries visited Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The imam of Drancy (Seine-Saint-Denis) had already participated in several demonstrations denouncing Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 and anti-Semitism.
The trip was organized by ELNET (European Leadership Network), an organization that defines itself as “independent” and “dedicated to strengthening relations between France, Europe and Israel.”
This structure had also organized a rally of 2,000 people in Paris last March entitled “For the Republic, France against Islamism”, bringing together right-wing and far-right figures.
According to Hebrew media, the delegation was made up of imams from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy.
“Some choose to act differently”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog was quick to praise the “courage” of this visit in a video broadcast on his X account: “We are all children of Abraham, confronted with radical forces that try to hinder this progress (…) Through your visit and your courageous action, you embody the majority of those who, in the Middle East and in the world, aspire to a life together.”
